When you spoke to him did he provide any hints as to a time frame for the next release?

Before Christmas maybe?

No he will not do a ETA anymore.
people expect him to deliver then and when he can't, people complain.
All I know is that he is working hard to make a great new version.

The thing he is doing with C++ is "Alchemy".

That indicates some new and complicated things being introduced. It is of course impossible for him to have a reliable estimate on when the work will be ready. And of course all of us want to have "some date" to look forward to... that is a dilemma.

It is no fun for him to miss deadlines, just as it is no fun for us to experience the missed deadlines.

Things take the time they take, and that is the only thing we can be sure about.

Personally, based on what little info we have to go on, I would estimate 2 months until release... but for the sake of playing, I will say "December 10th"...

(whoops & edit) 6 days left and C++ is no Alchemy . It was simply no good idea to talk about a release date. I hope for the first half of next year.

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/alchemy/

That is what he is using C++ for... so yes; it is alchemy.

I fear my wishful prediction will be overrun by reality...

"The Alchemy preview is prerelease software that is not supported by Adobe and may contain bugs. It is therefore advised that Alchemy not be used to generate code for use in production."

That's not a very comforting paragraph.

As with everything else, there are probably some very safe areas in the code, and other areas where you can only expect a limited success... and I am sure things have improved on the support, and Denis is not known for throwing out half-baked breads intentionally... so I am confident that things he does with Alchemy, will be good.

... but then again... it could become a temporarily functional feature, only to die after the next Flash update.... such as the icon (image) supported context menu my ex programmer did. It worked on most browsers at the time... but works on NO (to me known) browsers today.... less than a year later.

I hope for the best.

Wow! If Denis is truly using Adobe Alchemy to port C++ code to Flash the potential implications are tremendous.

I know nothing about Denis' plan so this is pure speculation, but some time ago I asked him if it were possible add an opengl rendering engine to Flash. The performance improvement would be significant. His response was that it's simply not possible. But with Alchemy, porting C++ graphics libraries for use in FPP might allow significant improvements. A quick check shows there is plenty of discussion and effort along these lines.

Again, I don't know what is actually possible or even in Denis' thoughts. But it is fun to speculate.
